Downton Abbey depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era—with great events in history having an effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy.
TV series is set in the era of King George V reign in a fictional estate of Downton Abbey, Yorkshire country, where members of an aristocratic family live together. Earl of Grantham, Robert Crawley is the head of the family. He is married to a rich American heiress Cora because of her fortune in order to save and restore the mansion. But after some time the marrieds have fallen in love with each other and Cora gave birth to three wonderful daughters. In the spring of 1912 earlâ€™s cousin James Crawley and his son Patrick die in the Titanic's crash. Since the perished didnâ€™t have any other relatives the family is in turmoil â€“ only patrilineal has the right to inherit the mansion and the title of nobility. In fall Matthew Crawley, the heir of the Crawley family, arrives at the mansion with his mother. The young man is a novice lawyer and is used to more modest lifestyle than Granthams are. He is the only male offspring of the family and thus the only successorâ€¦
The action of the show taking place in the early 20th century. The estate called Downton lives Lord Grantham and his family. In the large family of Lord for each member of the family and servants of their own role and their own place. Downton Abbey season 4 begins with the news about Matthewâ€™s tragic death: he rushed home as soon as he was told that Mary had a baby son and crashed in a car accident. Downton Abbey season 5 continues the story of the Crawley family. Itâ€™s the beginning of 1924. The village people want to erect a monument dedicated to World War I victims and ask Carson to become the head of the committee. Edith still hasnâ€™t received any news from Gregson, her daughter is raised by a farmerâ€™s family and Edith cannot take part in upbringing her own daughter. Bransonâ€™s new acquaintance, Ms. Bunting, a school teacher is not approved of by Robert. Daisy decides to study math. Jimmy is followed by his previous mistress, Lady Anstruther. Lord Merton is courting Isobel. Thomas keeps trying to elicit the connection between Bates and Greenâ€™s death from Ms. Baxter. He blackmails Baxter with her past. Molesley suggests Baxter to assume measures before Thomas gets a chance to tell the Countess about everything.
The new season of the series unfolds in 1925. Mrs. Hughes does not know what Carson wants - a real marriage and fictitious. Robert cuts staff of servants and suggests Mary to be the manager of estate. Anna can not get pregnant. But Mary shows her to the doctor, and he promises to do an operation which will increase the chance to bear and give birth to a child. Local authorities want to combine the local hospital with one large hospital in the district.
Anna became pregnant and she is very happy, but keeps it a secret. Thomas wants to find a new job. But eventually it turns out that this is not easy. Because estates are ruined, and aristocrats lose money. Carson and Mrs. Hughes get married and went to Scarborough for a honeymoon. At this time, Anna has a threat of miscarriage.
